About the Principal

Robert M. Berger

Mr. Berger has over 35 years of experience in retail, wholesale, distribution and automation services.  He has worked internally for, and consulted to firms ranging in size from start-ups to multi-billion dollar giants. He has functionally designed significant portions of multiple inventory management and point of sale systems. He has also managed retail facilities and co-founded two venture backed startups, a big-box retailer and a retail software house. 

As Principal at Berger Management Services, he consults in all aspects of retail operations and retail automation.  He specializes in assisting retailers in matters regarding planning an decision support, expense control, the selection and implementation of store and host systems and in the restructuring of operations to gain efficiencies prior to their next projected growth spurts.  In addition, BMS consults to hardware manufacturers and software suppliers regarding shaping their products to best fit into the retail marketplace.  He is broadly expert and experienced in managing the design, on-time development and implementation of retail system both in house and for software suppliers. 

He was a co-founder of Home Express, a home accessories retail chain, where he served as CIO and Administrative Vice President with responsibilities for planning, facilities, warehousing and distribution..  He also co-founded Managize Corporation, a retail software company dealing with expediting and reporting on special orders in an SaaS environment. 

Mr. Berger consulted to and later joined three client companies including Oracle, where he founded and managed the Oracle Retail Office with responsibility for expanding Oracle's retail acceptance, improving customer relationships and converting existing retail software companies to the Oracle platform. 

Earlier in his career, he managing all retail systems at Musicland, was a Vice President at Dennison-TRG where he ran their retail service bureau and designed, developed and sold retail inventory management systems.  At Sears, he held various field management positions at stores and warehouses and at corporate headquarters participated in the design and implemented several major systems including inventory management, catalog order entry, warehousing and distribution and the first major  electronic point of sale system in the United States.  He was also a councilman in Bolingbrook, IL and has served on various civic committees.
